Air Pressure on a Can

Empty soda can.
Heat source (e.g., stove or hot plate).
Ice water..Heat Can: Heat the empty can on the stove until it produces steam.
Invert Can: Quickly invert the can into a bowl of ice water.
Observe: Watch how the can gets crushed by the change in air pressure.
Record Observations: Have students describe what happens and why.
Discussion: Discuss how the steam and rapid cooling affect air pressure inside the can.
