Paper and pencils..Provide each student with a story problem card (e.g., “There were 5 apples on the table. John ate 2 apples. How many apples are left?”).
Instruct students to use counters to represent the objects in the story problem.
Ask students to act out the subtraction problem by removing the counters that represent the objects taken away.
Instruct students to count the remaining counters and write the subtraction equation (e.g., 5 – 2 = 3).
Discuss the solution and repeat with different story problems.
