Materials Required:
Rocks (brought by students or found on a nature walk)
Magnets
Paper cups
Water
Vinegar
Coins
Ultraviolet light
Weighing scale
Rulers or measuring tapes
Paper and pencils
Steps Involved:
Introduction: Have each student find or bring a rock from a meaningful place, such as their garden or a nature walk. Ask them to name their pet rock and share where it was found.
Drawing Activity: Allow students to draw their pet rock, paying close attention to its shape, color, and texture.
Exploration: Students will conduct experiments to see if their rock:
Responds to a magnet.
Sinks or floats in water.
Dissolves in vinegar (look for bubbles).
Is easily scratched with the edge of a coin.
Glows under ultraviolet light.
Observation: Have students write down their observations during each test, noting characteristics such as weight, size, and appearance (e.g., shiny or dull).
Description: Students will write a brief description of their rock’s properties based on the tests they performed.
Sharing: In a classroom setting, allow students to share their findings and descriptions with the class.
