Dice (one or two per student)
Paper and pencils.Introduction (5 minutes): Explain that students will use dice to explore different ways to make and break down numbers.
Rolling Dice (10 minutes): Have students roll one or two dice and add the numbers shown. For example, if they roll a 3 and a 4, they will work with the number 7.
Composing Numbers (10 minutes): Students use the dice results to find different combinations that add up to the rolled number (e.g., 7 can be broken down into 3 + 4, 2 + 5).
Decomposing Numbers (5 minutes): Write down and draw the different ways they can decompose the number based on their dice rolls.
Discussion (5 minutes): Share and compare the different combinations students found and discuss how they can use dice to explore number composition and decomposition.
Extension (Optional): Roll dice to generate larger numbers or use more dice to create and decompose numbers in different ways.
