Materials Required:
Mason jars or clear glass jars
Bean seeds (e.g., kidney beans or lima beans)
Paper towels
Water
Optional: Magnifying glasses (for closer inspection)
Optional: Labels and markers (for documenting growth stages)
Steps Involved:
Introduction: Explain the concept of germination and the stages of plant growth. Discuss what students will observe in the jar (e.g., roots growing, sprout emerging, seedling developing).
Preparing the Jar: Have students place a few damp paper towels inside the mason jar. The paper towels should be moistened but not dripping wet. Arrange them so they are pressed against the sides of the jar.
Planting the Seeds: Instruct students to place bean seeds between the paper towels, spaced out so they can be observed individually. Ensure the seeds are in contact with the wet paper towels.
Observing Growth: Place the jars in a location with indirect sunlight and observe daily. Have students record their observations, noting changes in the seeds, roots, and sprouts.
Documenting Changes: Encourage students to draw or write about what they see each day or week. Use labels and markers to track the growth stages if desired.
Discussing Observations: Regularly discuss the changes and stages of growth with the class. Use the jars as visual aids to explain concepts such as root development, sprouting, and seedling growth.
Review and Reflection: At the end of the observation period, review the growth process with the class. Discuss what students learned about plant life cycles and how observing the jar helped them understand the stages of plant development.
