Materials Required:
Zippered plastic sandwich bag
A piece of bread
Soda (in a small plastic cup)
Sharpie marker
Steps Involved:
Label the zippered plastic sandwich bag as “stomach” using the Sharpie marker. Optionally, draw a rough likeness of the stomach.
Label the cup of soda as “stomach acid.”
Explain to the students that the bag represents the stomach, the soda represents stomach acid, and the bread is the food.
Have the students pour a couple of tablespoons of soda into the bag.
Add the piece of bread to the bag.
Seal the bag tightly.
Allow the students to shake and knead the bag, simulating the stomach’s movement.
Observe how the bread begins to break down and becomes almost liquid, demonstrating the digestive process.
