Materials Required:
Stethoscope (optional)
Cardboard tubes or rolled-up sheets of paper (one per child)
Steps Involved:
Begin by explaining the “lub-dub” sound that the heart makes when it beats, and how doctors listen for these sounds to check if the heart is healthy.
If you have a stethoscope, demonstrate how to use it and allow each child to listen to their own heartbeat or a partner’s.
If a stethoscope is not available, provide each child with a cardboard tube or a rolled-up sheet of paper.
Have the children work in pairs, taking turns listening to each other’s heartbeat by placing the tube or rolled-up paper against the chest.
Encourage them to describe what they hear and compare it to the “lub-dub” sound you explained earlier.
Discuss the importance of a regular heartbeat and how it indicates that the heart is working properly.
