Optional: Clay or air-dry clay (for making runic pendants)
Introduction:

Discuss Viking culture and the significance of runes. Explain that runes were used by the Vikings for writing and magical purposes. Show examples of runic inscriptions and their meanings.
Learn the Runes:

Rune Chart: Provide students with a chart of Viking runes (rune alphabet) and explain the sounds and symbols associated with each rune.
Practice Writing: Have students practice writing their names or simple words using the runic alphabet. Encourage them to refer to the rune chart as they write.
Create a Runic Pendant:

Prepare the Pendant Base: Use cardstock or thick paper to cut out pendant shapes (such as circles or squares). If using clay, shape and flatten the clay to create a pendant base and let it dry or harden according to the instructions.
Write with Runes: Using markers or colored pens, write students’ names or chosen words in runes on the pendant base. For clay pendants, carve the runes into the clay using a pencil or tool.
Add a Hole: Use a hole punch to make a hole at the top of the pendant (for paper pendants) or make a small hole before the clay dries. This hole will allow the pendant to be strung.
Finish the Pendant:

Attach String: Thread a piece of string or yarn through the hole in the pendant and tie it to create a necklace or keychain.
Final Touches: Allow any paint or markers to dry completely. For clay pendants, ensure the clay is fully dried before handling.
Reflect and Share:

Showcase Pendants: Allow students to show off their runic pendants and explain the meaning of the runes they used.
Discuss Learnings: Reflect on what students learned about Viking culture and the use of runes in writing and communication.
Extension Activity (Optional):

Runic Messages: Have students write secret messages or short stories using runes and share them with classmates. Decode each other’s messages to practice reading runic script.
