Materials Required:
Large chart paper or poster board
Markers or crayons
Pictures or illustrations of vegetables (optional)
Steps Involved:
Draw a large chart on the paper, dividing it into three sections labeled “Tops,” “Bottoms,” and “Middles.”
In the “Bottoms” section, list and draw or place pictures of vegetables like beets, carrots, and radishes.
In the “Tops” section, list and draw or place pictures of vegetables like broccoli, lettuce, and celery.
In the “Middles” section, list and draw or place pictures of corn.
Discuss with students how different vegetables grow and which parts are edible, emphasizing that beets, carrots, and radishes grow down into the soil (bottoms), while broccoli, lettuce, and celery grow up from the soil (tops), and corn has parts that are considered “middles.”
Use the chart to ask questions and encourage students to identify where other vegetables might fit on the chart, reinforcing their understanding of vegetable growth and parts.
