Essential Learnings

The Portuguese curriculum establishes Essential Learning (EL) as a set of guidelines designed to ensure that students acquire fundamental skills and knowledge throughout their school career. Although these guidelines serve as an important starting point, at OYE we believe that they should be seen more as a guide than as inflexible rules.

We believe that the real learning process takes place in a richer way when it is driven by the curiosity and personal experiences of the students. Rather than following a rigidly defined educational path, we encourage a more adaptive approach, where knowledge is explored in a fluid and personalised way. This allows students to discover and integrate new concepts according to their individual pace and interests.

However, we recognise that many parents find it difficult to approach free learning, often because of the traditional education they have received. Many parents may feel insecure when trying to answer their children's questions and curiosities, because their own curiosity and ability to question the world have been limited by the school environment in which they grew up.

To support these parents and develop a more effective approach, OYE is developing an innovative course. This course aims to train the ‘seeing eye’, stimulating curiosity, intrinsic motivation and the ability to observe and question the world around us. Through this course, we aim to enable parents and educators to find answers and manage the questions that arise, developing a more confident and effective approach to raising children.

For those who don't yet feel ready to return to this world of curiosity, or for bureaucratic reasons need a more concrete structure, we offer an organisation of content based on the EAs, structured in tables by school year. Each table leads to specific pages with a variety of educational resources, adjusted to different learning styles. In this way, we offer a combination of freedom and structure that respects the individuality of each student, promoting a learning environment that is both personalised and organised.
